Fabulous Newbie: Ashley!

If you haven't caught up with us lately, you may not know that Cheer New York recently had tryouts! It's always so great to see the energy and enthusiasm that our newbies come in with. Leadership really noticed Ashley S. stepping up at this week's practice. Always eager to be involved in whatever stunt is being thrown, always practicing the dances and cheers with her teammates when there's down time... It was an easy decision for the leadership to crown her this week's Fabulous Award winner!

Get to know Ashley S!!

Ashley was born and raised here in NYC, she started cheerleading when she was 12 years old and you might be surprised to learn that she is ambidextrous! Even though she hasn't hit it yet, her favorite stunt is a kick-double...she says "one day I'll get there and master it!" Like everyone else in NYC, she's looking forward to spring so she can wear spring dresses and flip-flops.

Congratulations on winning the Cheer NY Fabulous Award Ashley!

Wondering where Cheer New York will be next? Make sure to come say hi to us at The Original GLBT Expo on March 9 & 10!

Terry, You Are FABULOUS!

This past week, Cheer New York had an exceptionally amazing practice. We cannot wait to show everyone what we've been working on. Bases and back-spots were busy showing off their muscles tossing and flipping flyers all over the place. One strong base really impressed the leadership this week, which is why Terry R. won the Fabulous award! Terry is one of our newest newbies and has had such a positive attitude from the get-go. He has gone out of his way to get to know everyone on the team and gets involved at every chance he can.

"From day 1 Cheer NY has taken me in as one of their own, and that is why I'm fabulous... because this whole team is awesome!"
Congratulations Terry, keep up the fabulousness! We can't wait to see who steps up to the plate tonight when we join together again for yet another weekly practice.

DIVAS Concert Live tonight!

CNY Director Felipe H. gets a touch-up, while Vh1 Director Vinny Lopez helps
teammates Raymund F. and Rick H. find their motivation.

Cheer New York was very excited to be asked to appear in a nationally televised commercial (click here to watch it) for the new Vh1 Divas Live Concert, premiering tonight on Vh1 at 9 pm. Newbie Janelle A, took part in the shoot, and shares her experience below!

“The first time I saw the commercial I was so excited that I watched it two inches from the screen, my eyes more open than a 7-Eleven, smiling so hard my cheekbones twitched for a good 5 seconds after it was finished. I couldn't believe eight hours of shooting was condensed into 40 seconds of perfected soundbytes of what "Divas" means to Cheer New York. I immediately showed it to my roommate, who watched it three more times with me.

I was so excited and proud to be a part of this event and even more proud that Cheer New York and its mission was going to be on a nationally syndicated commercial. The following day my girlfriend and her husband called me from California saying they were eating breakfast to me on their 42-inch television. I was contaminated with a case of the giggles at the thought that 3,500 miles away, people were seeing what I had watched over and over and over again- so the experience was real, and my experience, thus far, with this organization has been nothing short of incredible.

We may be recognized more for our bright uniforms and gasp-inducing stunts and pyramids, but at the heart and soul of this team are 45 members dedicated to raising money for charties and people living with life threatening illnesses, such as AIDS and cancer through our Cheer For Life Fund. And, I can definitely speak for all of them when I say that the people we raise money for are OUR inspiration and the reason we continue to do what we do- cheer for life!”

The team will gather at XES Lounge (157 West 24th St) in Chelsea tonight at 8 pm to watch the concert together. Fans, friends and supporters are all welcome to come in and join the team!

Meet the Cheer NY Newbies: Meet Jason

For the second installment of "Meet the Cheer NY Newbies" we are going to delve into the mind of newbie Jason. What did Jason have to say about his tryout experience?

"I came home a few months ago to a postcard about Cheer New York tryouts with a handwritten note from my room mate saying "You would be great at this!" Months later, I found the postcard and thought that it would surely be fun, but because so much time had passed, I figured that I had missed it. However, I called and orientation was the next day. I decided to go.

I was a cheerleader in high school--easily over 15 years ago. Without hesitation, I just thought to myself that I would just go grin and bear it and see what would happen. That first day was hilarious and filled with such positive energy. Although my jumps and flexibility are not really what they used to be, I was quite surprised how quickly it all came back to me. I made the squad! Everyone seems really nice and this is surely going to be an experience. Of course, fundraising is part of the plan, raising money for charity is a big plus."

Meet the Cheer NY Newbies!

CNY had one of it's best tryouts ever! We welcomed nine new cheerlings to the squad: Tre B., Jason S., Josh B., Nicholas P., Lara B., Ali S., Gray C., Diego T. and Chip R. They impressed us with their skills, enthusiasm, spirit, and all-around fierceness!

And they have jumped right in! Nicholas P. rocked it out in the Logo Channel taping on Friday (see previous post). And fellow newbies Lara B. and Diego T. proved themselves CNY superstars, stunting and charming VIPs at a Nike-sponsored Fashion event in SoHo on Aug. 8. Director Felipe says: "I can't say enough how thrilled we are to have you guys as part of our charity organization."

But let's hear what Nicholas P. had to say about tryouts and joining the CNY family:

"I was a bit nervous even though I had some cheer experience from High School over 10 years ago. I even convinced my former roommate Ali, to attend the clinic with me. We were greeted by Clay and he immediately began chatting with us and making us feel welcomed. The clinic was AWESOME! I remember Scott helping me with part of the cheer and was very appreciative of everyone's assistance. I chatted with Ali afterwards and we both knew we wanted to try out--hands down.

On tryout day we did stretching & practices as a group and it was very nice to see such a team effort from everyone. I knew this was a group I could be a part of as everyone was nice, supportive, and knew how to have a good time, despite everyone's nervousness. After tryouts, we awaited an e-mail the following day with the results. I was anxious and when the e-mail came, I was so excited! I made the team!

I feel very accepted into this diverse group of individuals. I have been to two practices and one sign up event and I feel like I have been a member for much longer than a week. Everyone works with everyone, especially the newbies, as we learn the material, work on our jumps, and practice stunting. Everyone has a positive attitude and despite the hard work we put into practice, it seems like fun. I am happy to be part of this team, this charity organization. I am a cheerleader for Cheer New York, what else can I say?"
