Happy Birthday Maiko!!

Today is Maiko's Birthday!! So, while you are recovering from your food induced comas, please send all your warmest wishes to her.

Maiko is one of the sweetest, bravest, kindest, and most talented people we've had the pleasure of meeting. We are VERY lucky to have her as a part of Cheer New York.

Happy Birthday Maiko! We love you so much!!

OUT AT NIGHT!!!

Cheer New York was fortunate enough to be asked to welcome park guests at Six Flags “Out At Night” party!! Even though it meant a two-hour road trip out of the city, including an embarrassingly well-executed sing-a-long to “I’m Coming Out”, it was worth it for the chance to shake our stuff by the Fountain as we greeted the thousands of excited people into the park for a night of roller coasters, drag queens, and a ridiculously fun evening at the park. A bunch of CNY’ers turned out to put a smile on the faces of the park guests before splitting up to enjoy the attractions for themselves. For those who preferred libations over lines, there were plenty of places to mingle with the appreciative admirers, while those of us who hadn’t gotten tired of screaming, even if it meant waiting for an hour, enjoyed losing our voices on the new Dark Knight ride among many others. Considering the last time I was at Six Flags there were chaperones involved, it was great to see such a colorful crowd at the park living it up.

Overall, “Out at Night” it was a blast, and hopefully we’ll be back next year! - Tre

Cheerleader of the Year 2008: A Poem

Rick H. was so excited about winning the Cheerleader of the Year award this year that he HAD to express himself through prose. Enjoy!

Cheer New York, it's all about us.
At Elmo, they must've wondered what's all the fuss.
Year after year, we come to celebrate,
With food and a cake made by Nicholas (squared) -- a full plate!

Balloons, ribbons, pictures, and people dressed to the nines,

Drinking margaritas, cosmos, and fancy wines,

But warmer than that wine dribbling down Tonika's dress,

Was the love I felt recognizing the year, one of Cheer New York's best.

NYC is a huge place, making it easy to get lost in the shuffle,

But being on CNY has helped make the sense of life out of the kerfuffle.

There've been rough times, bouncing from gyms to studios to the pier,

But we've come out ahead -- and CNY is going strong into its seventh year!!

I'll never forget the day Felipe called and told me about the team,

Back then winning Cheerleader of the Year seemed like a dream,

But because of the love and support, like Manny -- my personal growth -- it SHOWS.

But don't think that I'll just bask in the honor that this award bestows.

No! Harder, better, faster, stronger just like Matt implored.

Fundraising so that trip to Gay Games in Germany, we can afford.

And using
goodsearch.com whenever I get bored.
And bringing to the team more unity and accord,

n the meantime though...

CNY, thanks for the love, the laughter, the sweat! - that is embodied by this award.

CNY Continues to Support the Avon Walkers

On October 5, Cheer New York parked themselves on Pier 84 in Manhattan to support the 4,500 participants in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer New York. From about 11am-3pm, the walkers completed their 39-mile trek through the five boroughs of New York City over two days. They were exhausted, elated, and emotional as they crossed the finish line, often into the arms of their families who were clearly so proud of their accomplishment.

One of the best parts about these events is seeing the reaction on the walkers’ faces as they realize there are cheerleaders there cheering, dancing, and performing stunts just for them. And since we have been appearing at this event for several years, some of the repeat walkers recognize us now!

Here are some statistics:

  • Every three minutes, a breast cancer diagnosis is made.
  • A woman has a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • There are more than 2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

And men aren’t completely safe. Though less than 1% of cases are men, it is possible. That is why events such as these are so important, and why Cheer New York is honored to be a part of it every year.

Cheering's Good Karma

Just discovered this languishing on my DVR, it aired October 16. Earl, who's devoted his life to improving his karma, helps his brother Randy realize his life's dream to be a male cheerleader. Hilarious episode of a hilarious show. And, as usual, it's a little sweet too, the writers get it, it's spirit that matters.
