CNY Continues to Support the Avon Walkers

On October 5, Cheer New York parked themselves on Pier 84 in Manhattan to support the 4,500 participants in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer New York. From about 11am-3pm, the walkers completed their 39-mile trek through the five boroughs of New York City over two days. They were exhausted, elated, and emotional as they crossed the finish line, often into the arms of their families who were clearly so proud of their accomplishment.

One of the best parts about these events is seeing the reaction on the walkers’ faces as they realize there are cheerleaders there cheering, dancing, and performing stunts just for them. And since we have been appearing at this event for several years, some of the repeat walkers recognize us now!

Here are some statistics:

  • Every three minutes, a breast cancer diagnosis is made.
  • A woman has a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • There are more than 2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

And men aren’t completely safe. Though less than 1% of cases are men, it is possible. That is why events such as these are so important, and why Cheer New York is honored to be a part of it every year.
