Celebs and Cheer NY Rally for a Cause

At the Central Park Challenge 3K Walk for the YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities, CNY pumped up the hundreds of walkers who participated in the star-studded fundraiser with dazzling cheers and partner stunts. (from the left: Raymund, Felipe, Tonika, David Eigenberg, Kelsey & Wil)
Local news anchor Bill Ritter, Miss USA Crystle Stewart, Miss Teen USA Hilary Cruz, and "Sex and the City" star David Eigenberg (who plays Steve, husband of Miranda) got the crowd going with their emotional speeches and support for children and adults with disabilities and their families. Raised funds of the event neared $1.3 million.

The walk was a close-knit family atmosphere (pictured here, Wil comforts a young walker with a hug), with many teams sporting T-shirts named for certain loved ones, like "Jo-Jo's Joggers" and "Katie's Fan Club." Strollers were a familiar sight, as well as dogs and a certain candy-striped banjo-player, who serenaded the walkers. CNY raised their spirits with encouragements as they crossed towards the finish line.
After the walk, the event featured a Motown cover band that revved up the audience as well as the CNY team to dance and party along to such classics as "Stop! In the Name of Love" (with white gloves!) and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." It was certainly a "day of hope" and fun! -- one that CNY will remember always.
A special thanks to the YAI photographer Eric Cooper who provided these amazing pictures!! Check out more of his work at www.bigshotcoop.com. For more information about YAI visit www.yai.org -Raymund F.

And the Spirit Stick Goes to.....
June has always been a special month for Cheer New York. Though the team performs at events ranging from the AIDS Walk to providing entertainment for a Glamour magazine party, its roots will always lie in LGTB events. So the recipient of the June Spirit Stick has to really work hard to represent the team during Pride month. And the winner of the June Spirit Stick is.........Kelsey M (pictured between captains Tonika and & Manny)! Kelsey has been a part of CNY for almost four years. She was Cheerleader of the Year in 2005 and captain for the 2006-07 season. After Manny and Tonika announced the winner, Kelsey replied "It is such a joy to be a part of this team. You all are my family."
Congratulations Kelsey! Now give us the dirt.
Name/Nicknames: Kelsey, Kelseytrain (because I'm part train), Kels & Kelsaur (because I'm part dinosaur)

Hometown: Durango, Colorado
Occupation: Media Planner for Wal-Mart
When did you join CNY: November 2004
Previous cheer experience: Cheered for 4 years in high school, coached for one year and have been on CNY for approaching 4 years (!!!!).
Favorite stunt: As a base: basket tosses, as a flyer: Scorpion
Favorite CNY moment: Opening ceremonies at Gay Games 2006. I was standing on Soldier Field in Chicago with hundreds of fellow PCA (Pride Cheerleading Association) teams dressed in white from head to toe. We finished our dance routine, looked around at each other and just began to yell and hug and cry and....rejoice the amazing event we were all so lucky to be a part of. I get chills just thinking about it.
Interesting fact about you: Usually being 25 and still a cheerleader is my interesting fact but in this case I guess my interesting fact is......I once jello wrestled to raise money for my high school wrestling team. Go Demons!

Queens in Queens
June 1 kicked off Pride Month and Cheer New York was in the thick of it, marching in the Queens Pride Parade in Jackson Heights. CNY dazzled hundreds of onlookers as we cheered, jumped, stunted, and strutted down Roosevelt Avenue. The crowd kept us going with their incredible spirit and energy on this sweltering hot day. Following the parade, we continued the celebration at the street festival where we mingled with the crowd and posed for pics before making our way back to the 7 train. We were pumped by this exciting start to a month packed with Pride! -Katie M.
