Pride And Spirit Takes Manhattan!

The cheerleaders of CNY are still recovering from a fantastic NYC Pride Parade. We marched down Fifth Avenue to the Village, cheering, jumping, dancing, and stunting our hearts out.

A few highlights: high-fiving Grand Marshal Lieutenant Dan Choi after he watched our routine, launching basket tosses right in front of the Stonewall Inn, where the gay rights movement began 41 years ago, and cheering for crowds with the Empire State Building behind us. What an amazing day!

Yes, it was hot, it was sweaty, and it was tiring, but the glitter, the love, and the PRIDE was in abundance. We're just sad gay pride month is over. Only 11 months until Gay Pride 2011!

If you missed the team's performance, you can check out videos, picture and so much more at the Cheer New York Facebook page. The team wowed the crowd at from midtown to the Village, and we've got the clips to show it! Happy pride everyone!

Cheer New York Supports Homeless LGBT Youth In NYC

Picture taken at Sylvia's Place, from Shelter, a book by Lucky S. Michaels,
Director of MCCNY Homeless Youth Services, published a book on LGBT Homeless Youth

Despite, the grateful accolades of the crowd, Cheer NY is about more than just doing awesome cheerleading tricks and entertaining people. Integral to our existence is the Cheer for Life Fund. Our mission is to raise money for local NYC charities that serve our fellow New Yorkers faced with life-threatening situations. We select a new recipient of our fundraising efforts approximately every six months. Currently, we are raising money for the Metropolitan Community Church of New York's Homeless Youth Services which serves the city's LGBT homeless youth population.

From MCCNY's website: An estimated 25% to 40% of New York City's 20,000 runaway and homeless youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. These young people, many of whom have faced harassment and discrimination from the very people that should protect and nurture them, are in desperate need of services to achieve independence and self-sufficiency. Metropolitan Community Church of New York, a faith-based nonprofit organization located in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen and Harlem neighborhoods, has responded to meet the needs of this disenfranchised and marginalized group of young, homeless people. Since 2002, the Homeless Youth Services of Metropolitan Community Church of New York (MCCNY) has worked tirelessly to meet the unique needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender runaway and homeless youth of New York City. MCCNY’s Homeless Youth Services includes a 6-bed emergency shelter housed in the church itself (Sylvia’s Place), and additional services such as food, clothing, mental health counseling, HIV prevention, and help with a variety of job and school needs.

We are so proud to be raising money for this amazing organization providing such vital services to an underserved population. It makes us cheer just a bit louder, toss just a bit higher, and smile just a bit brighter knowing that our efforts support our fellow New Yorkers in need.

News breaks today from the New York City Government of a new initiative from the Bloomberg administration to address this growing problem.
“New York City is determined to keep providing the support and the care that too many of our young people cannot find in their own families and homes,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We will begin work on many of the strategies outlined in the report immediately, so we can give these young adults a chance to pursue all that this great city has to offer. The more support and resources we can offer, the brighter their futures become.”
As, CNY's own Dana S says: "I'm proud of NYC for being a pioneer on these issues!"

She can be proud of Cheer New York as well for being a part of the solution! We are proud to be supporters of Sylvia's Place and for all LGBTQ youth who are struggling in our City.

To find out more, there is a Rally, today, June 14 at 6 pm Union Square in support of LGBTQ homeless youth.

CNY's Spring Agenda!

Author Dana S. rises to the occasion of AIDS Walk.

Spring is in full swing and Cheer New York has been busy! We recently cheered on 45,000 walkers at the largest AIDS fundraiser in the world: AIDS Walk NYC. This year the walkers raised $5.7 million for Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), the world's first AIDS organization, and other local AIDS service organizations in the tri-state area. This year was extra special: it marked the walk's 25th anniversary and for the first time, NY's governor was in attendance. (Governor Paterson even stopped by CNY to say hi!!)

Cheer New York is honored to cheer on the walkers every year. May 16 was a beautiful spring day and the celebration was in full swing. An amazingly diverse cross-section of New Yorkers walked by: young and old, gay and straight, men and women, all walking to make AIDS history. We entertained and supported the crowd with our signature stunts, mounts, cheers, and dances. And because of our location along the route, most walkers got to see us not just once, but twice. We hope we made those 6.2 miles a bit easier!

In the upcoming weeks, Cheer New York will be busy. We'll be back in Central Park for the YAI Central Park Challenge on June 5, at Queens Gay Pride on June 6, at Brooklyn Gay Pride on June 12, and at Philadelphia Gay Pride on June 13. And our biggest event of the year, of course, Manhattan Gay Pride on June 27!! Make sure to check us out and say hello!

On a side note, this particular cheerleader spotted Jane Lynch (yes, that Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester, the Cheerios' diabolically evil yet fabulous coach on Glee) walking on East Houston Street last weekend!! And I was in my cheerleading uniform! I was too star-struck to say anything, and now have to live with the fact that I missed an opportunity to take a picture with Jane Lynch in my Cheer NY finest. Gotta love living in NYC!
