If We Can Make it There....

What happens when the male CNY'ers have access to skirts, wigs, and professional makeup artists? As you may imagine, their inner drag queens emerge!! The occasion for this outburst of crossdressing was Cheer NY's invitation to perform in The Actors' Fund's benefit performance of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas...on BROADWAY!!!

That's right, folks. Cheer NY made its Broadway debut on October 16, sharing the August Wilson Theater stage with such theater luminaries as Emily Skinner (Side Show), Terrence Mann (Les Miserables), Lucy T. Slut of Avenue Q (with us above), and the cast of the Off Broadway hit, [title of show], who happen to be CNY fans themselves!.

To say the experience was amazing and exciting does not do it justice. The support we received from the director Mark Hoebee and the choreographer Denis Jones, as well as the whole 60 person cast, was extraordinary. Flashbulbs were popping as we took pictures with fellow castmates Richard Kind ("Mad About You"), Andrea McArdle (Annie), and Constantine Maroulis ("American Idol"). At the cast party, we rubbed elbows with Bobby Cannavale ("Will & Grace"), Sally Struthers, and Actors' Fund president, Brian Stokes Mitchell (Man of La Mancha).

Yes, we are all a bunch of name-droppers now! We can't help it as this is clearly the most exciting CNY event ever, and will be hard to top! It just shows how much Cheer New York is broadening the types of charities it has relationships with, and expanding the opportunities these relationships bring to each member and the entire team.

New York City + Walking = Recipe for Success!

If there is one thing that New York City is known for, it is striving to be the biggest and the best. Sunday, October 8th was no exception when 3,500 participants raised a record breaking $9.7 million toward finding a cure for breast cancer. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is not an event for the feeble or hasty. In order to take part in this two day walk participants need to raise a minimum of $1,800 and walk 39.3 miles.

Cheer NY comes to the Brooklyn Bridge Park every October to cheer on and thank these incredible people that commit so much time and energy to raising money for breast cancer research. The event as a whole is always amazing but personally, I tend to look forward to a few significant parts: an amazing view of the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, a continuous parade of every pink item ever made from the traditional breast cancer ribbon to angel wings, but mostly I look forward to the walkers themselves. Even though Cheer NY was there to support the walkers, I couldn’t count the number of times we were thanked for being there. I am amazed that after raising thousands of dollars and walking for two whole days these remarkable people refuse to stop giving.
